Lakshya for the Aimless

Saw Lakshya. Farhan Akhtar has aged as a director. This movie is no longer a peppy youth centric one with no message. The metamorphosis of the laid back, lakshyaless, happy-go-lucky youngster into a focussed army captain has been shown in an interesting and appealing manner unlike most Bollywood movies.

The best part is that the film, like most other patriotic ones, is not didactic, nor is it filled by the deolish paki-bashing. The film is as much about finding yourself as it is about Kargil and Laddakh. And this is what really separates this film from the others in the genre.

The songs are good, esp. Main aisa kyun hoon, where Hrithik has danced really well. Another good thing is that the songs are there only where required, and they seem a part of the script.

However, at times, the films editing hasn't been so crisp. Farhan, it seems, gets so lost in the war sequences that they tend to become repetitive. The scissor could have been used more often. Also, in the first half, instead of showing Hrithik as an aimless person, the director has shown him more as a mentally retarded child, and Hrithik seems to be carrying on from Koi Mil Gaya.

Nevertheless, the film is highly entertaining, after all Preity Zinta is there.

Laksya is fantastic !!! Mind-blowing action, breath-taking visuals, awesome choreography and great acting.. all in all, an entertaining and fulfilling movie..

well, talking about the message of the movie. Many of us will identify with the 'Lakshya'-less Karan. I mean, many of my friends (mostly KGPians), including me, think that they are well placed, have a decent cg, every semester passes with no major event that has the potential of disturbing their path towards their Lakshya.. but well, i think we compromise when choosing our Lakshya. We take the oft taken path, one that we are sure has been tread by many and without much difficulties. We then try to conform ourselves, and this includes our thinking and creativity, to that 'Lakshya' which others have chosen for us. Its like running towards our aim on a tread-mill. We sweat and toil but net displacement : zero, zilch.

But then, saying such things is a bit too idealistic.. We guys aren't afraid to work hard. We are brave, intelligent, diligent towards our job. But what pains me sometimes is that many of us don't get any results. Why chose an aim that you can't set your heart to? Why burn midnight oil for the sake of getting a good scholarship? Why is it that our minds crave for something else? well, i guess its a part of growing up. its not only about choosing a Lakshya, but choosing a good one.

Aah, it seems the comments have gotten too philosophical. Well, coming back to the movie. The trade analysis reports say that Lakshya, although a very good movie in all respects, is not doing good business. Its an intelligent movie and deserves to get a good profit. But then why is it failing? Haven't the Indian audience matured for such a movie?

What we forget is that the Indian audience does not comprise of people like us students who come from a highly urban background, who like watching 'English' movies and are more interested in special effects. What a common man wants to see in a movie is a fantasy world. Realistically he can't ever be a part of such a fairy-land, but in those 3 hrs. in a dark room, when he is alone, he is more interested in the heroine's cleavage than the special effect.

In a recent interaction with a dear wingy who was not too impressed with Lakshya, I asked why didn't he like the movie? His answer : "... PREITY ZINTA who was clad in a really loooooong blanket exposing nothing but her face. if only she could make ur d*** stand...." well, that says it all. My friend may have said all this jovially, but then thats the way it still is !!!

    but hey, Lakshya ROCKS !!!
