hey kk.. even i have been gmailed :) siddharthseth@gmail.com

well i do agree.. Gmail does rock...

just wanted to share a funda about Gmail that i came to know in a discussion here..

when you create an account with GMail.. all the data that you have on your account is allocated randomly in the google data servers.. i mean they don't have a separate 1 GB of disk space stored for you.. whenever you login, google uses its search algo, the fastest of all search engines, and retrieves all the data relevant to your mail box... as such they don't need huge servers for individual mail boxes.. if the traffic from the entire community of gmail users increases, just add new servers

on the other hand, yahoo and rediffmail have had to provide their 100 Mb and 1 Gb of services using their old funda of memory allocation.. thats costly and they will have to come up with new business strategies to keep the cash registers ticking..

man.. what a great way to implement your algo.. i am not sure of the above funda being technically correct as i have heard it from some chronic funda giver here... but anyways google is the company to look out for.. it may well be the next Microsoft !!

anyways, coming to the essence of Gmail itself.. i don't know whether there can be an "esssence" of gmail..
but still, you can see the sudden hoopla around it in chatrooms and mailing lists.. people frantically asking their friends and in some cases even strangers to send them Gmail invites.. i don't suppose they want the 1 Gb of space.. more than anything else they want to be a member of that elite club of Gmail users.. the current strategy of Gmail has, as I say, created a new breed of "Haves" and "Have-nots" among the net users... this shows how deeply entangled our lives have become in this "world wide web".. personally, sundays are pretty bad for me as i do not get to access my lab so that i can check my mail... its like living another virtual life and keeping a tab on it more often than we keep on our "real" lives !!

but then, all this has its own advantages.. we are well informed, better than our "ancestors".. take this blogging funda.. its a great way to pen down your thoughts and lot easier ( i should say a lot less laborious) than actually scribbling on a paper.. :D

    wotsay?

p.s. i am sorry for joining in late on your suggestion regarding something like the communicate_iitkgp stuff... i agree with you. as for now, i will be posting my views as comments on your blog... will switch over to my blog when i get a topic to write on.. waise, i know that the first topic i will write will be on "Procrastination".. man.. i AM one lazy bum !! chal see ya.. have fun

    hey man,

    that was one huge comment.

I agree with you. The hoopla is only because not everyone has access to a gmail account, and that is what is making people do all the asking and the peeping. The point is that human race is such that it doesnot ever appreciate anything given free, it only wants something by which it can show that it is different, it is better, it is elitist - as you said. Anybody would say that yahoo or rediff serve the purpose well, in fact better than we need. Tell me how many of us have actually used all features yahoo gives. But something new comes along; and people rush after it.

Yes, I know of the common dump through which Gmail searches; in fact, when we send attachments I have heard that gmail would not make copies of the attachment in everybody's mailbox, but serve it out of a central pool of attachments which the users share. And that makes it all the more better. In fact, rediff etc. are making a big mistake by copying google; they dont have the processes in place, and their algorithms are just not as potent. Besides, they dont have the resources to fight google. To survive, they will have to use some other means to differentiate themselves; as the intellectual talent at Google, esp in terms of algo ppl, is realy peerless. I think the better way for rediff would be to indianize the service, which google obviously would not be doing for a long time now.

But Gmail does rock! I liked the way they look at mail, as conversations. In fact, I would say that I really loved the Google way of mail.

As far as communicate is concerned, I would like to start it again as a weekly meeting ground, but not with all the initial members. We should start with say 4-5 members and invite a new one every week till we get to say 20. After that we should not add any more for the time being. Better to have a small cohesive group where we understand and appreciate each other instead of a huge unconnected group.

    lemme know
